Update: Solar in South Africa
South Africa is slowly but surely starting to realise its full potential in harvesting the sun’s energy. The construction of a sun farm in Durban was scheduled to commence in September, and after completion, will provide Durban’s power grid with a megawatt of electricity. Click here to read more.
In our previous newsletter, we ran a story on the new building by-laws to be promulgated during September/October. On 9 September 2011 Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Rob Davies, signed the amended National Building Regulations and Building Standards act. The amended act also appeared in the Government Gazette.
The new regulations stipulate that all new commercial and residential buildings will have to receive at least 50% of its hot water requirements from renewable energy sources such as solar water heating. The regulation also stipulates that buildings should be designed with the region’s climate in mind to prevent the use of extra energy to heat or cool the building.

Solahart of the month
After 30 years of loyal service, Bedfordview resident Kevin Smale’s Solahart solar water heater had to be replaced.
“We never really had any problems with our Solahart. After about 25 years of service, the collector panels had to be replaced. My insurance company said they’ll get their own guys to replace them, but I’m not convinced that the panels they installed performed optimally. That’s why I insisted on replacing my old Solahart with a new Solahart,” says Kevin.
When Kevin phoned Selected Energy to notify them of the problems he experienced, services administrator Shirley Neville immediately contacted Kevin’s insurance company to claim a replacement. She also sent two of Selected Energy’s installation staff members to Kevin’s house to identify the problem. According to the fault report, the system failed to hold pressure when the closed circuit was put under pressure – the system didn’t work as a solar water heater, but rather as an electric geyser.
“I would like to congratulate the Selected Energy team on their excellent service, and the installation team who immediately identified the problem.”
