The Eskom DSM programme is an initiative by the national power utility to promote the use of alternative energy in homes and businesses around South Africa. Through the programme, Eskom hopes alternative energy sources will contribute 10 000 gigawatt hours (GWh) to final electricity consumption by 2013. Eskom therefore offers a rebate to consumers who buy products that are part of the Eskom DSM programme. To qualify for an Eskom rebate, suppliers are expected to conform tostrict standards to ensure that consumers get the best possible valuefor money. These standards include a standard five-year warranty and SABS testing for safety and the mechanical and thermal functioning ofthe systems.
